The NAHU Education Foundation
Mission: The NAHU Education Foundation will
educate the public about the benefits of meeting the
health, financial and retirement security needs of all
Americans through private sector solutions.
Vision: The public will have access to information
about private sector solutions for health, financial and
retirement security.
History: In 1992, the NAHU Board of trustees authorized the creation of the Foundation for the
Promotion of Consumer Health Education. The
Foundation was charged with obtaining donations to
further educate the public on current health care issues. Since that time, the Foundation has undertaken
the following initiatives:
• Annual Specialty Insurance Conferences
• Disaster Relief Grants for industry individuals
affected by 9/11
• GLBA Handbook providing information on
privacy issues
• Wetzel Scholarship Fund for individuals seeking
higher education in the insurance industry
In 1997, the Foundation officially changed its name
to the NAHU Education Foundation to formalize the
renewed focus on educating consumers, government
agencies and industry professionals on issues related to
health insurance.
In 2007, after a period of dormancy, the Foundation
was revitalized. Our most current initiatives include:
• Consumer guides that explain various types of
healthcare coverage in layman’s terms
• A Healthy Access database to help consumers and
policy makers find information about public and
private health insurance options in all 50 states
• Consumer Brochures on Health Insurance
including:
Faces of the Uninsured—tells the true stories
of real uninsured Americans who were able to
purchase affordable health insurance through
an agent.
Consumer Guide to Health Insurance -
addresses topics from “What is health
insurance?” and “How does health insurance work?”.
Wellness Programs —offers facts supporting
how healthy employees can benefit the business and lower overall health care costs.
• Legal analysis and Powerpoint on Connector and
Exchange proposals
• “Speaking of Books” audiocasts that interview relevant industry authors on issues of the day
• Spanish language video to explain the need for
health insurance
• Brochure and Outreach—What to do when you
turn age 65?
• Media Outreach Campaign—What to do if you
lose your job?
• Outreach—State programs to enroll S-CHIP eligible children in private health insurance options
Purpose: Our strategy continues to focus on
identifying and promoting messages consistent with
the mission and vision of the organization. The
great debate about the U.S. Healthcare system continues and the need to educate both consumers and
policymakers has never been greater. The Foundation
serves as a source of critical information for all par-ties concerned with the future of the healthcare system in our country.

Foundation is an important element in our success.
