Gordon Meemoriiall Award Wiinneer
Mike Kelly and Bob Tretter present the 2008 Harold R. Gordon Memorial Award to Mike Matznick.
Every year, the National Association of Health Underwriters bestows its highest award upon
a great industry leader. For more than 60 years, the Harold R. Gordon Memorial Award has
recognized outstanding service to the association and the industry and to the recipient’s
clients and community. At NAHU’s Annual Convention in San Diego, Michael Matznick was
presented with the award and named the Health Insurance Person of the Year.
Mike was president of NAHU at a time when grave issues faced our industry. Not only did he capably led
the association through tough times, but he has had consistent involvement in the industry and our
association. He has also been a leader to his chapter in North Carolina, which has long been a vibrant and
powerful state association.
To give you an idea of what Mike is all about, we asked some people who are close to him to share their
thoughts on his award. After reading these comments, we’re sure you’ll agree that Mike is, indeed, the
person of the year.
Mike is an exceptional leader—not a flashy or loud one,
but an effective and persistent one. He approaches problems
with a calmness that keeps everyone focused and just enough
of a sense of humor to keep everyone relaxed and engaged.
NAHU has gained much from Mike’s leadership and so has his
community.
But enough about Mike. Let’s talk about Carol. Because she,
too, brings tremendous leadership to everything she undertakes.
And when the two of them get engaged on a project, it’s amazing
to watch. They complement and strengthen one another in a
unique and powerful way. Health Underwriters is lucky to have
them both involved and helping shape the future of our profession.
