look more like bugle corps at the
time, and someone came up with
the idea of having people twirling
rifles with the band. I figured I
could do that. So one other girl
and I had someone show us neat
tricks with rifles, and soon we
were out there in the front of the
band twirling rifles instead of batons. We had way more fun than
the majorettes.
“All those years of twirling
baton actually led me into the insurance industry. My instructor’s
husband was a vice president of
group health sales and, when I
was 20, he suggested that I apply
for a junior underwriting position
at his company. I can remember
him telling me that he thought
health insurance was a great industry for women because it was a
much more even playing field. I’ve
been in the insurance business
ever since.” ■
